IELTS Exam 2024 - Syllabus
The IELTS syllabus is vast, as it has two modules and four chunky sections. The four sections have a fixed structure, pattern, time duration, and number of questions. Here is how the syllabus looks like in details:
Writing syllabus:
The writing segment is the first section of the IELTS examination. It contains short essays or reports that are addressed to an educated audience. There are two tasks in the writing portion. First, students need to study and understand graphs, charts, data, and tables before writing a 150-word essay. Second, students need to write an essay in their own words, based on their views, ideas, or discussions.
1. IELTS Academic Writing: This type of IELTS exam topic is based on general interest and is intended for students applying for a graduate or undergraduate degree. The first task consists of charts, data, or graphs that students must analyze and explain in their own words. Secondly, the students need to draft an essay of 250 words based on the data documented and produce a proper view or argument with relevant examples. The writing style of the report and essay must be formal and structured.
2. IELTS General Training writing: The General writing module has two tasks, but the level will be easier than the Academic module. A situation will be given and based on that; a letter must be written by the students. This letter should be formal or semiformal based on the type of situation. The students need to explain, argue, or request a certain authority. Based on the viewpoint of the first letter, the next task will be an essay. The tone of this essay can be semi-personal or personal.
Reading syllabus:
The IELTS reading module will have three questions that will be based on general interest and are meant for undergraduate and postgraduate degree students. There are a total of 40 questions, including short questions, multiple-choice questions, phrase matching, and data lists. The IELTS Reading Exam has different patterns in the Academic Training Module and the General Training Module.
1. IELTS Academic Reading: The Academic Reading section consists of three long paragraphs. They are analytical, descriptive and factual. These paragraphs are mainly from books, newsletters, journals, and articles. The level is for professional and postgraduate students aspiring to study abroad.
2. IELTS General Training reading: The format of the general training reading examination will be the same as that of the academic module. However, this portion is relatively easier because it will have topics that the students come across in their day-to-day lives. The three reading passages are based on topics such as pamphlets, advertisements, and pamphlets.
Listening syllabus:
The IELTS listening part is the same for both the Academic Training Exam Module and the General Training Exam Module. I have a total of 4 questions. The first two conversations are based on social and environmental needs, and the last two revolve around the educational situation. All interviews last 3 minutes. Students can only hear the four conversations once. Based on these conversations, several questions like note completion, multiple-choice and sentence completion will be asked.
1. Conversations 1 and 2 will be based on social and regular situations. Under this, the first conversation will be between two people in a common scenario and setting. The second one will be a monologue that will be based on a common everyday situation too.
2. Conversations 3 and 4 are based on the educational situation. Below this, the third conversation takes place between four people in the context of proper education or training. The fourth conversation will be a confession based on academic context and topic.
Speaking syllabus:
The IELTS speech test is the last section and follows the same pattern and structure as the academic and general training modules. This section assesses a candidate's general speaking skills. This section tests the candidate's knowledge and effective communication skills for communicating abroad. There are a total of three questions: personal interviews, discussions, and speeches.
1. Part 1-Introduction: This part focuses on the candidate's self-introduction. Students need to talk about themselves, their background, hobbies, and educational outcomes and achievements. The focus should be on the tone, structure, syntax, and use of words.
2. Part 2 – Long Term: Here the topic is given to the candidate. Candidates have about two minutes to write down everything related to the topic and talk about it. After the candidate's speech, there will be a short question and answer session.
3. Part 3-This is a long discussion and the questions are deep, relevant and abstract. Discussions are based on serious questions and problems. IELTS is an important exam for future students who want to be educated in popular countries such as the United States, Australia, Europe, Canada and Germany. The IELTS exam patterns and syllabus are extensive due to the two modules and four sections. Students need to take the time to understand exam patterns, IELTS exam types, and question types

However, computer-based exam results will be available 57 days after the exam date. The IELTS 2024 score is calculated on a 19-point scale, which is the average of each sub-score. If the average of the partial grades ends at 0.25, the overall grades will be truncated to the next half band. In situations where the average sub-score ends at 0.75, the IELTS total score will be rounded to the nearest full band.
IELTS Cut off 2024
IELTS is designed to assess the English proficiency of students at all levels. Therefore, students can never fail the test. IELTS scores are based on each of the four skills on a scale of 1-9, and students also receive overall band grades. Please note that the IELTS cutoff score depends on the university or program in which the student is interested, and not all universities or programs require IELTS exam qualifications. The total IELTS band score is important when applying for college, getting a job, or moving to an English-speaking country.
